Green light for Enniskerry road safety developments!
Following the recent traffic safety audit and community consultation process, Enniskerry Forum passed on the community’s road safety concerns to Wicklow County Council (WCC). WCC has now indicated that work to make Enniskerry village a safer place is about to begin!
Three raised traffic tables will be installed at the three main access points to the village – on Church Road, Kilgarron Hill, and Bray Road. These traffic tables will be made of tarmac (so visually unobtrusive), with all relevant markings. They will slow down traffic as it enters the village. WCC will also put up the signs needed to alert motorists.
At the same time, some of the pavements beside the raised tables will be improved. WCC says it has some old brickwork in storage that could be used for pavement improvements around the village. The work is to begin in mid-October and last for about a month. A traffic management plan will be operated so that disruption can be minimised.
Further improvements
Over the same period, improvements will take place at the junction of Cookstown Road and the entrance to Powerscourt Estate. The junction will be realigned to give better visibility to drivers exiting the Cookstown Road. In addition, WCC is adding pavements and crossings for pedestrians walking between the village and Powerscourt Estate.
Overall, this work will create a much safer environment for pedestrians.
Enniskerry Forum was informed of the development at a recent meeting with WCC engineer Eoin Heslin, as a follow-up to the Forum’s traffic survey, traffic audit and public meeting.
Any questions?
Who is financing the work?
The National Transport Authority. The work must be completed by end November or WCC will lose the funding.
Why tarmac tables?
Other finishes, such as cobblelock and red surfaces, used at other locations have weathered badly and many are being replaced.
What’s happening about the traffic lights in the village?
We have raised this with Mr Heslin. He is to review the matter once the traffic tables have been installed.
