Soroptimists transform the lives and status of women and girls through education, empowerment and enabling opportunities. The name Soroptimist was coined from the Latin soror meaning sister, and optima meaning best. In this way, Soroptimist means ‘the best for women’. From the founding of the first Soroptimist club in Oakland, California, in 1921, through to the present day where over 3000 clubs are flourishing throughout the world, Soroptimists have continued to strive to achieve ‘the best for women’ in every sphere of their lives.

SI Bray & District is involved in the organisation of the national Public Speaking Competition for girls in secondary schools. We also organise fundraising events to support local charities such as Bray Women’s Refuge, Purple House and others. Since 2023, we have been involved in the “Giving Tree” project and received over 300 gifts for Christmas serving charities such as Open Door, Five Loaves, SVP and women and children in direct provision centres.

Other activities include: tree planting on Bray Head, awareness raising as regards violence against women with leaflets, joining the annual UN “Orange the World” campaign, and with promoting the “one-million stars” campaign. Last but not least, we organise social events for our members.
