The meals on wheels service was started in Enniskerry during the 1970’s when local social worker, Ms Nan Wogan, became aware of the need for a service for elderly and living alone parishioners. Through her initiative Meals on Wheels was established. She, together with local sponsors Mrs. Corcoran, Mrs Jo Kelly, Fr Delaney and Canon Stokes became patrons. Funds were donated by well-wishers to enable the group to purchase charcoal heated metal containers to transport the hot meals. After negotiations with the Health Board, Enniskerry Meals on Wheels became entitled to receive 24 meals on Tuesdays and
Thursdays for the area. These meals were (still are) provided by St Columcille’s Hospital, Loughlinstown. The Enniskerry area covers Glencree, Curtlestown, Kilmolin, the Village, Cookstown, Carriguna, Ballybawn, Kilcroney, Killegar, Kilmacanogue, Fassaroe and Rocky Valley.
Duties were divided between four voluntary groups of helpers, each group taking turns to deliver meals once in four weeks. Over the years many people have delivered meals on wheels, some of whom have been doing so for more than 25 years. The contact person at all times for these helpers has been the Chairperson who also liaises with the Public Health Nurse for advice on who is in need of meals.
MARCH 2023 The important thing to note is the HSE grant has been withdrawn and we have to fund the meals service from Loughlinstown Hospital by means of an annual donation. In addition we now deliver meals on Saturdays which are provided by Bray Meals on Wheels costing €3.50 per meal. We want to grow the service to reach more people but our limited resources are already stretched in covering the cost of meals for those recipients who are unable to afford to pay a donation.
