Enniskerry Gospel Choir (www.enniskerrygospelchoir.com) was formed 10 years ago under the musical directorship of Dr Neville Cox as a community gospel choir with more than 35 members drawn from the parishes of St Patricks and St Marys Churches, Enniskerry, and the people of Bray, South County Dublin and North County Wicklow.
The choir is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year with an ‘Informal Service of Words and Music’ in the church where it was formed. The congregation will include the choir, past members, friends and those celebrating the start of the Gathering Weekend in Enniskerry Village, of which this is the opening event, under the musical leadership of Dr Neville Cox. The service will be led by Archdeacon Ricky Rountree (St Patricks) and Fr John Wall (St Marys).
The service will be held on Friday 24th May 2013 at 8.00 pm in St Patricks Church, Powerscourt, Enniskerry and entry is free, with light refreshments afterwards in Powerscourt National School.
It marks the start of the Enniskerry Gathering Weekend – a full weekend of music, culture and entertainment – and all are welcome. Past and current choir members and anyone interested in gospel music are invited to join in the congregation (this is not a concert performance).
Enniskerry Gospel Choir, is a community gospel choir comprising over 35 members, regularly performing in St Patrick’s (Powerscourt) and St Mary’s churches in Enniskerry, Co. Wicklow and in the surrounding area. Members also sang recently in the opening performance of ‘Gospel Rising’, the annual national gospel music festival, on Bray seafront last weekend, 11th May. Members of the Junior Gospel Choir sang at the same festival on the Sunday afternoon.
The choir was formed following a church community forum, by Archdeacon Ricky Rountree of St Patricks Church and his counterpart from St Marys, as an initiative to support and build the musical community in Enniskerry, allowing local people with an interest in singing and in gospel music an opportunity to sing together and support the community, the two parish churches and charitable events.
Their music ranges from traditional gospel music to special arrangements of contemporary pieces arranged especially for the choir. Former musical directors include Dr Neville Cox, Siobhan Kennedy-Perri and Judy McGrath. The choir’s current chairperson is Tom Dalton of Bray.
Following the recent retirement of Judy McGrath the choir is currently looking for a new musical director to lead them from September 2013.
The choir have helped raise over €60,000 for community and charitable aid projects including the Glendalough Primary School in Uganda, Mental Health Ireland, Newcastle Hospital, local churches, community projects and other worthy causes. They have also supported the Harlem Gospel Choir in the Pavilion Theatre and helped inspire the creation of a Junior and Teen Gospel Choir for children in Enniskerry.
