Enniskerry SFC – Girls Tournament Report
Andreas April 23rd, 2007
The first girls soccer tournament in Enniskerry last weekend was a great success. Click Continue Reading for a detailled report.
The Bog Meadow in Enniskerry saw it’s very first soccer tournament solely for girls. More than 200 girls representing 10 clubs in Co. Wicklow and Dublin competed for trophies in three age groups, Under 12, Under 10 and Under 8.
The U8 age group saw two Enniskerry teams competing with St. John Boscoes and a joint team from Newtown and Roundwood. Enniskerry 1 won the final against Newtown/Roundwood, thanks to a goal by Mia Cullen.
In the U10 age group 9 teams were playing in two groups. Group A was won by St. Josephs from Broadford 2, Lourdes Celtic and a mixed Enniskerry/Roundwood team. Group B was wide open and was won by Greystones from Newtown, Enniskerry 1, Enniskerry 2 and Broadford 1. Broadford Rovers won the first semi against Greystones by a single goal, while St. Josephs prevailed against Newtown after a thrilling penalty shootout. The final was an exciting match, that saw Broadford Rovers as a deserved 2:0 winner.
5 teams competed in the U12 age group, where St. Josephs proofed no match for the opposition, where they beat a mixed Enniskerry/Lourdes Celtic team in the final. The other teams competing were the Co. Wicklow academy, Leixlip United and a mixed Enniskerry/Greystones team.
There was also an exhibition match in the Under 6 age groups, where the 4-6 year old girls from Enniskerry Schollboys/girls Football Club provided much excitement to the many spectators.
Enniskerry’s own Aine O’Gorman, who is playing in the Irish Ladies team, and Carol Murphy, the Regional Development Officer of the FAI, conducted the winning ceremonies and presented all players with medals as well as some goodies from the FAI.
Many thanks also to Four Star Pizza who sponsored pizza for the day and also to the mums of Enniskerry SFC for providing tea and cakes to the many spectators.
Enniskerry SFC is now also the only club representing County Wicklow with four teams in the Dublin Girls Sommer League, which will commence in the middle of May.
